Free taker

(Oldest Posts First)

Does anyone agree we need a free taker that will score at least 9 out of ten of our frees ,were going to be playing in a very tough div 2 next year where games can be won or lost on a point or two ,even against Fermanagh if we were scoring nearly all our frees we would of been out of sight in the 2nd half (before their goal) ,on the training pitch we should be pick a common free taker and in training he works on kicking frees until he can kick them over from every scorning positions ,I think this is a very important part of what Cavan will have to do to even insure staying in div 2 this year , we must squander at least four or five points per game ,if anyone can do the stats ?,the main point is not to be losing games by a point or two after missing good score able frees , any views ?

Good shout. Look at what Cillian O'Connor does for Mayo, top scores in the championship regularly and nearly all from placed ball. Unreal free taker. Beggan for Monaghan is deadly as well. Morgan and Cluxton have set the standard for keepers and its catching on. I have seen Gilsenan take a few frees but not consistently.

Martin Reilly can hit them. We need to settle on one player as these things can win or lose games. I remember Heslin for Westmeath missed an easy free against us last year in Breffni which probably would have put us out of the championship after 2 games. These things matter and its something we need to work on.

Maybe that was the thinking behind trying out ray galligan in goals.(which i'm surprised they didn't continue with). He would be a great place kicker and I'm sure he would
Take great kickouts too. All they needed to do was work on his positioning and shot-stopping in goals. He certainly would have been an option. One of the best place-kickers in the county but possibly hasn't the pace or power for outfield play with the county but given the importance these days of the need for accurate and long kickouts it would have been interesting and it would also solve the free-kicking dilemma.

We have several quality free takers and we are not wanting here. Martin Reilly is a very good free taker as is Niall McDermot Enda O'Reilly to name just three so not a problem at all. The last two matches the condition of the KBP pitch with areas frozen and the length of the grass was not conducive to taking frees.

Sean stop being silly ,every team have good free takers the point is to train a free taker to score on every chance possible ,going by you we score all our score able frees, well we don't ! your wrong hence your post is not worth the space it takes up on my screen ,we have not got a consistent free taker , and my point is we can go back to div 3 ,if we don't get that in order. loosing games in div 2 by a point or two after missing lets say 5 score able frees would be criminal when we can do something about it

It would be safe to say you don't have a clue about what we have at our disposal. I told you and others the pitch was not conducive to free taking. Give credit where credit is due most frees from 40 meters will be dispatched even the 45 meters and for me that is a major plus now lets try and be positive instead of this stupid negativity night after night on this forum. I will log out for it's better than get involved with individuals who don't have a clue of what caliber of players we have in our current panel. Enjoy. Slán go fóill

to see Cavan take a 35 yard free short and end up going away from the goals, before losing it was awful to see tonight, as was seeing several frees from 45 dropping well short. When was the last time Cavan had a free taker who could put over frees under pressure, especially from distance. Ronan Carolan is the last one I can think of. Maybe someone can name a more recent one.

Having said we do need a better free taker, we are in far more need of a couple of forwards who can win their own ball, and win the 50 - 50 ball, too many small and weak forwards.

Problem here is we have too many Good Free Takers not up to it from Play, Can't win there own ball, work space to kick scores and can't cement a place in the team,

And on every showing so far we have no one to kick scores under pressure consistently game after game.....Big Problems to come in the League Attacking wise!!

Shouldn't a thread be opened titled 'scorer from open play' too as that also seems to be a major problem..or maybe Sean has some insight as to what was wrong with the pitch in the 2nd half on Sat eve!

Is Ronan Carolan still involved at Under 21 Level , does he coach forwards or free takers at that level? It should be done it would add a lot to our teams.

Barry Reilly is a top free taker, flawless in the club championship from short and long distance, should be given a run in the team

Conor Madden has to be an option. A good long range free taker and he would add height and strength to a small forward line. He played well in the O'Bryne Cup for DIT against 4 county teams.
