Cian Mackey says he’s certain Cavan have the talent to deliver a first Ulster SFC title in 22 years this weekend, but insists the players must back it up with a high work-rate against Donegal.
At 32, Mackey is amongst the older guard within the Breffni men’s squad and feels the team has benefited from Mickey Graham’s decision to blend youth with experience since taking over the reins last autumn.
The county’s last Anglo-Celt Cup success came in 1997 when Donegal All-Ireland winner Martin McHugh was at the helm and his son Ryan will be one of the chief threats to the underdogs on Sunday.
"Martin (McHugh) was the one who got Cavan over the line in '97," he told RTE Sport. "He's still a hero in Cavan. He was a great player. Ryan will be the boy Donegal will be looking to do damage to us.
"It'll be a huge performance from us that we need and a slice of luck. I think you need a slice of luck when you want to win any sort of title. We'll have to work hard and hopefully get a bit of luck on the day.
"The talent is there. We believe in our own ability without a doubt but we can't look past the Donegal team either. They are one of the top teams in the country let alone Ulster."
