Football update

Well done to the Cornafean Senior Lads on their good vicotry over Shercock on last Thursday evening in the final fixture of the Division 2 ACFL 2018.  The victory guarantees the Reds another year in Division 2 of the ACFL  and well done to the team and management on their hard work in achieving this.  Minds will now turn to the upcoming Intermediate Championship.

Hard luck to the cornafean U13 girls on their defeat to a strong St. Finbarrs team in the Division 4 league final played in Ballymachugh on Saturday morning. It was a game of two halves as the girls in Red played a magnificent first half leading well at the break but unfortunately were overturned in the second period by a very strong and experienced St. Finbarrs side.  Congratulations to the team and management on their great efforts in reaching the final.

Division 2 ACFL Cornafean 2 - 14   Shercock 1 - 7

The Reds will be happy to have completed their ACFL campaign for 2018 and finally secure the 2 pts that guarantees them Division 2 status for 2019.  In a lack lustre game played in Shercock on Thursday evening Cornafean did what they had to do against a somewhat under strength home side winning the match by a 10 pt margin.  Shercock had the first point on the board after 3 minutes but Jack Wharton who was very lively on the 40 yard line soon equalised.  Indeed Jack cracked in a great goal on 7 minutes and points followed from A. Smith and B. Doyle to put the Reds in a commanding position.  Shercock to their credit were working hard and a pointed free and an opportunist goal from Philip Clerkin after a mix up in the Reds defence put the homesters back in the game.  The second point of the first half belonged to Cornafean with 3 pts from Barry Doyle (2 frees) and one from play from Andrew Smith to give the Reds a deserved 5 pts half time lead.  One of the highlights of the first half and throughout the match was the fine high fielding of Reds midfielder Emmett Goldrick.  Shercock started the second half positively with points from P. Clerkin and an excellent 45 from goalkeeper Aaron Smith.  Really that was as good as it got for Shercock as the Reds took over once again and points followed from B. Doyle (2), A. Wharton, N. Sheridan and two excellent 45's from Andrew Smith.  Indeed it was Andrew who cracked in Cornafean's second goal just before the long whistle after another good team move leaving the final score Cornafean 2 - 14 Shercock 1 - 7.  It was a workman like performance from the Reds but the team and management know there are sterner tests ahead.  Well done to the lads on securing Division 2 status for another year.  Best for the team on the night were R. Geoghegan, J. Miney and A. Wharton in defence, the aforementioned Emmett Goldrick and N. Sheridan in midfield and up front B. Doyle, A. Smith and J. Wharton.

Scorers A. Smith 1 - 4, B. Doyle 0 - 7, J. Wharton 1 - 0, A. Wharton 0 - 1, N. Sheridan 0 - 1 , J. McGahern 0 - 1.

U13 Girls

Well done to the U13 girls and their management team on reaching the Division 3 league final which was played on Saturday morning last in Ballymachugh.  The Reds girls were excellent in the first half dominating their opponents in all positions and leading well at the break but the experienced St. Finbarrs side were a different proposition in the second half and eventually overpowered the gallant Reds to comfortably win the game.  Thank you to Miranda and Gillian for their hard work with the Reds squad and no doubt there will be better days ahead for this galland and talented bunch of girls.
