Birr have appointed clubman Barry Whelahan as their new senior hurling manager for the coming year.

The three-times All-Ireland club SHC winner was part of a Birr side that dominated the club and county scene for many years.

However, the famed Offaly club have not won a county title since 2008, when Whelahan’s father Pad Joe was in charge, while they lost the deciders in 2011, ‘13 and ‘16.

Whelahan has been handed the task of ending that drought and he takes over from Gerry Spellman who was in charge this year.

A boost for the new manager is that Sean Ryan has retired from inter-county hurling but will continue to line out for his club.
