Derry's Anton Tohill during the AFL Combine at UCD

Anton Tohill has followed in the footsteps of his famous father Anthony by signing for an AFL club.

Derry legend Anthony had a stint with the Melbourne Demons in the early 1990s before returning home to win an All-Ireland SFC medal with the Oak Leafers in 1993. Now, nearly three decades later, his 18-year-old son has agreed a two-year rookie deal with Collingwood.

Anton, who played for the Derry U20s this year, was signed by the Melbourne club after impressing at the AFL Draft Combine recently. Standing at 6'6", he will link up with Collingwood next month for training ahead of the 2019 AFL season which starts in March.

The news is a blow to Derry GAA who lost another of their rising stars, Conor Glass, to AFL outfit Hawthorn three years ago.

The Magpies have also snapped up Cork's Mark Keane on a two-year rookie deal. Mitchelstown clubman Keane was a key part of the Rebels' U20 squad this season.
