Mattie McGleenan has stood down after two seasons in charge in Cavan
Mattie McGleenan has resigned his post as Cavan senior football manager following a two-year stint with the team.
McGleenan's decision comes 11 days after the Breffni County's All-Ireland SFC exit to Tyrone in Round 3 of the qualifiers, which officially marked the end of the two-year term he was handed after succeeding Terry Hyland in October 2016.
The Tyrone native is believed to have met with officials from the county board tonight to inform them that he was stepping down from his post.
The board released the following statement earlier tonight:
"Following a two year term, Mattie McGleenan is announcing with immediate effect his decision to step down as Cavan senior football team manager.
"Mattie along with his management team and players earlier this year secured promotion back to Allianz League division 1 for 2019, drawing with Clare and with wins over Louth, Meath, Cork, Down and Tipperary. Having been defeated by Donegal in the Ulster Championship, Cavan then defeated Wicklow and Down before losing narrowly to Tyrone in round three of the All Ireland Qualifiers.
"Mattie would like to sincerely thank his backroom team and all who helped over the two seasons, Lorcan Martin, Aidan McCabe, Finbar O'Reilly, Jimmy Higgins, Eoin Maguire, Tom Gribben, Peter Walsh, Martin McGovern, Patricia O'Reilly, Plunkett McCallan, John O'Connor, Hugh Donnelly, Declan Coyle, Ollie Martin, Brian Henry, Adrian McKiernan, Niall McKiernan and the late Dominic Earley. He also thanks the medical team of Dr Philip Carolan, Simon Gaffney, Eamonn O'Reilly and Brendan Sherry.
"Mattie would like to thank the county board under Chairman Gerry Brady and the officers for the opportunity to manage Cavan and for the continued support over the past two years. He wishes Cavan all the best in the future.
"Cavan GAA would like to put on record their appreciation and gratitude for the huge commitment and effort Mattie and his management have given to Cavan football. Mattie has an infectious positivity and was always a pleasure to work with. We wish Mattie and his family every success in the future."
