John Meyler was surprisingly upbeat after Cork suffered their first defeat to Kerry in senior hurling since 1891.

Despite fielding an experimental side in the Munster SHL dead-rubber clash at Austin Stack Park, Cork's 10-point loss still came as a huge shock to hurling followers everywhere.

"It was level enough there early on, but then Kerry got some good scores, five or six points and then they got the goal which steadied them and they played some good hurling, I thought," the new Cork boss is quoted as saying in the Evening Echo.

"Just like the other two games that we played in the Munster League, we were using it to try and find some new players and one or two fellows there we were quite happy with today. We must focus ourselves for two weeks' time when we play Kilkenny in the league."

The former Kerry and Wexford manager added: "I thought Eoghan Keniry did quite well today, that's what we are looking for and a squad is going to be important now in the National League and in the Munster championship, so it's critical that we find these players."
