Marty Clarke has joined the new Cavan U20 backroom team

Former Down All Star Marty Clarke has been named as a part of the new Cavan U20 football management team for 2018.

After weeks of speculation, Cavan county board confirmed that ex-Cavan Gaels forward Kevin Downes will oversee the Breffni County's fortune in the new grade with ex-Mourne playmaker Clarke, who steps into inter-county management for the first time, and Crosserlough's Jimmy Higgins making up his backroom team.

Downes' appointment comes following two years as a selector with Terry Hyland's senior management in 2015 and 2016 and he had a similar role with Westmeath senior footballers this past season.

Prior to that the former Cavan hurler had spent four years as coach with the London senior footballers, while Higgins was also a part of Hyland's backroom in 2016 and worked under current boss Mattie McGleenan during the Tyrone man's first year in charge.

Down a grade, John Brady is set to stay on with the county's U17 footballers following a successful first season which saw the Blues reaching the Ulster final.

The Ramor United man also guided Cavan to its first All-Ireland minor semi-final in 43 years in August, losing out to eventual four-in-a-row winners Kerry at Croke Park.
